18. Death of Wolverine

As this is the most recent entry on this list, you’ve probably heard at least a little something about the Death of Wolverine miniseries. It made something of a splash in September and October of 2014, with its promise of certain doom for our angry, hairy, mutant buddy.

At the beginning of the series, a virus shuts off Wolverine’s healing factor, leaving him in an incredibly vulnerable state. He refuses all attempts to regain his healing ability and attempts to navigate his new life. One last, big adventures ensures in which he yet against comes up against the Weapon X program. He faces off with the awesomely-named Dr. Abraham Cornelius and dies the most metal death possible – encased within a flood of adamantium.

The astonishing part is, he’s still kind of dead in the Marvel universe. Well, at least as dead as anyone can be in the world of comics. There’s still any number of alternate dimension copies, including the delightful Old Man Logan previously discussed here. Nightcrawler even sees Wolverine in the afterlife while on one of his own adventures. Honestly, it’s just a matter of time before someone brings him back, but kudos for the relative restraint, Marvel.
