Jimmy Kimmel’s Mid-Oscar Tweet Breaks Personal Record
By Tina Wargo
The Oscar host’s on-air Twitter antics directed at President Trump immediately went viral.
Last night’s Oscar ceremony had plenty of firsts, including a presenter straight up reading the wrong winner for the evening’s culminating Best Picture award. But despite the high drama and insane shock of the last few minutes, the majority of the night went fairly smoothly under the jovial supervision of host Jimmy Kimmel.
Though he made certain not to miss any opportunity to take much-deserved jabs at the current administration, Kimmel kept things fairly light. He picked on some celebs, he fueled his on-going feud with Matt Damon, and didn’t let more than a few minutes pass without openly lauding queen of the Oscars (and kind of the world) Meryl Streep.
And because we somehow live in a world wherein the president of these United States is engaged in a public feud with Meryl Streep, political jokes and the most decorated of the Oscar nominees were able to be combined so very naturally.
In an on-air bit about halfway through the evening, Kimmel asked that his phone be mirrored on the big screen. There, he did what celebs these days are doing best: he trolled Trump. As it happened, the crowd seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the segment. As I write this, though, it has not yet received a response. I get the feeling it will be eventually be proclaimed as “unfair” and “overrated” and “so bad!”
And in just 15 minutes, according to @TwitterData, Kimmel’s simple tweet to our troll-in-chief, became his most retweeted tweet ever. As of writing, the Streep-approved hashtag has over 185k retweets and 290k favorites.

And thus, completely unsurprisingly, Meryl Streep helped break yet another record. But she’s still overrated, right?
