Starz finally announces the premiere date for the long-awaited American Gods, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. I just wish it were tomorrow.
American Gods, Neil Gaiman’s long-awaited TV adaptation of his Hugo award-winning novel, will premiere on Starz on April 30.
Thank the gods for cable television, because Neil Gaiman finally has creative control over his work. He’s the executive producer, along with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, the awesomest parts of Star Trek: Voyager).
The Journey of Shadow Moon
American Gods is the story of Shadow Moon, to be played by the perfectly cast Ricky Whittle (The 100). We follow Shadow as he’s released from prison, only to find his wife and his best friend just died in a car accident, leaving him completely at loose ends. Right away the crotchety, one-eyed con man Mr. Wednesday takes Shadow into his employ as itinerant dogsbody-cum-bodyguard.
To seal their contract, Mr. Wednesday takes Shadow for drinks with ginger giant Mad Sweeney, who claims to be a leprechaun. The two have something in common other than Mr. Wednesday; they are masters of sleight of hand. They exchange coin tricks, and the drunken Sweeney conjures a golden coin that he gives to Shadow. He should not have done that.
Shadow goes to work for Mr. Wednesday, doing odd jobs and meeting odder people. But they aren’t really people. When actual people move to America, so do their gods. The problem with humans, though, is we just can’t stop making new gods and we keep forgetting about the old ones.
What’s it like to live as a god among men? What does Mr. Wednesday really want from Shadow? Tune into Starz on April 30 at 9 p.m. EST to figure it out along with Shadow Moon.
