Marvel and Game of Thrones Continue Cross Pollinating

The Marvel-verse continues to populate their world with the Westerosi dead, as casting news announces Game of Thrones actors joining shows.

As Game of Thrones continues to wind down production, killing off the unnecessary and condensing from ten episodes a year to seven, more and more alumni who rose to fame through their work in the Seven Kingdoms are released into the wild to attempt to continue their careers.

Iwan Rheon, whose character Ramsay Bolton was recently done in at the end of Season 6, has been working hard to top his “as close to pure evil in Westeros” character Ramsay Bolton with his new roles. For instance, his first role out of the gate was Hitler. His second, as was announced yesterday, is Maximus the Mad in the upcoming Inhumans TV show.

According to Comic Book Resource:

"…the character is described as “a clever and charming Inhuman that is fiercely devoted to the people of Attilan, especially his brother, the King – although he harbors an intense desire to wear the crown himself.”Maximus is a character of great intellect who possesses a variety of mental powers, although his own mental instability affects how he uses the powers. As indicated in the character description, Maximus is often times an adversary of Black Bolt and the other members of his family."

Inhumans, as those who follow the Marvel saga closely will remember, was originally conceived as a movie, and scheduled to release in 2018. As more movies and sequels were added to the slate, and dates pushed down the line, Marvel chose to remove Inhumans from the moviehouse slate entirely, and place it in the TV section of the MCU, with a premiere date of September 26th of this year. (Considering that the Inhumans have so far only appeared on TV, this was a practical choice.) To make up for this slight, the pilot episode will open in IMAX theaters and run for two weeks, to help gin up interest in the new ABC offering.

Adding high profile Thrones alumni will also help get the attention of audiences. And the MCU isn’t the only one doing so. Over at FOX, which still owns the rights to the X-Men, they are also banking on Game of Thrones actors to anchor their latest trilogy. Sophie Turner, whose character Sansa is still alive in Westeros (though who knows for how long) was cast as the new Jean Grey in the reboot of the reboot of the rebooted next generation of X-Men. And now, despite the fact that the original X-Men movies back in the day already mostly did the Jean Grey story, reports suggest that the plan is to reboot them again.

According to io9:

"Simon Kinberg, who has co-written and produced the last three X-Men films, as well as produced Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Logan, basically everything in the franchise since X-Men: First Class. Collider reports that Kinberg, who has never directed a feature film, is in talks to direct the next X-sequel from a script he’s already written. And yes, that script would be the telling of the Dark Phoenix saga, which has been teased numerous times in the franchise."

Turner herself said that she would be getting back to work on X-Men this summer recently in an interview. But if this is true, then it looks like the franchise is planning on placing the entire next trilogy to be carried on her shoulders. Let’s hope the steely resolves she learned in Westeros helps her through.
