The ’10s

Now we’ve made it to the current decade. It seems like it would be premature to assign a theme before we reach 2020. However, for now, it seems like period pieces and true stories once again rule the day.

The Winners

2010: The King’s Speech

  • Colin Firth won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar. Tom Hooper won the Best Director award. Finally, The King’s Speech took home the Best Original Screenplay.

2011: The Artist

  • The Artist also won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Jean Dujardin), Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Costume Design, and Best Music for an Original Score Oscars.

2012: Argo

  • Argo also snagged the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing awards.

2013: 12 Years a Slave

  • 12 Years a Slave earned an award for Lupita Nyong’o as the Best Actress in a Supporting Role and the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar as well.

2014: Birdman, or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance

  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director, and Birdman also won for Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

2015: Spotlight

Key Picks

You have a lot of solid options here for a key pick, but Spotlight seems like a rather positive choice, since it’s the most recent Best Picture winner. Perhaps it might help you in your Oscar predictions for this year.
