3. Miss America (America Chavez)

America Chavez is not from around here. And, no, I don’t mean that she’s crossed an earthly border or moved here from a new high school. In fact, she’s from another dimension entirely. She’s only really here because us Earth people could really, honestly use another superhero.

America was raised in the Utopian Parallel, a world set apart from conventional time and adjacent to the Demiurge, a kind of sentient life-force. America’s mothers are essentially killed when they seal black holes threatening to pull Utopia into the rest of the Multiverse. In the aftermath of their heroism, America herself wants to become a hero. However, Utopia is, well, a Utopia. It doesn’t really need a defender or savior. So, America runs away, traveling through different realities until she settles on Earth and takes the name of Miss America.

Chavez apparently gained her superpowers through her close proximity to the magical, supremely powerful Demiurge. She can fly, for one. She’s also incredibly strong and durable, to the point where she can kick holes through reality itself. That’s real handy, considering that Chavez and her team of fellow teenage superheroes often need to travel amongst realms.

America Chavez, besides being a prominent Latina superhero, is also one of Marvel’s openly LGBTQ characters. It’s not a big reveal – America offhandedly mentions that she’s not interested in men – which is refreshing in and of itself.
