When David Bowie passed away, a huge void was left in the rock landscape. Now, for the first time in the USA, a new documentary will bring him back to life.
In a press release, HBO just announced that they’ve acquired the rights to the successful BBC documentary, David Bowie: The Last Five Years. Directed and produced by Francis Whatley, David Bowie: The Last Five Years is a compendium of interviews, archive footage, and interviews with both Bowie and his closest friends and collaborators.
The deal was negotiated after Bowie received five Grammy wins, posthumously, for his final album, Blackstar.
In life, he was known for being intensely private about both his personal matters and his creative process. David Bowie: The Last Five Years, however, gives great insight into his creative process thanks to interviews with the likes of Tony Visconti, who was Bowie’s long-time and legendary producer (and one of the creative geniuses behind Blackstar).
There is no word yet on when HBO will premiere the documentary.
In a statement about HBO’s acquisition of the documentary, Whatley said that getting Bowie’s message out to the world was the main goal behind the documentary. Whatley was also pleased that HBO would be the conduit by which the message would get out, since they have a history of wonderful programming.
"“Looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to reexamine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change. HBO, whose global output the world admires, is a great channel to get this incredible documentary out to the U.S. fans.”"
