9. Gambit’s Introduction

Okay, I am well aware the Gambit is another favorite amongst X-Men fans. He’s a roguish character, raised by thieves in Dickensian fashion. He can also, basically, make inanimate objects just kind of explode. Exciting! He’s also, uh, a little sketchy. Witness his introduction (or, rather, the aftermath of his introduction) in Uncanny X-Men #166 and #167.

There’s a lot to explain, but I’ll try to make it as succinct and comprehensible as possible. Basically, Gambit has been wandering the world, thieving and charming and daring people to understand his thick Cajun accent. He manages to come across Storm, who has managed to get herself de-aged and caught a nasty case of amnesia. The now preteen Storm also has excessively large anime eyes, poor thing.

Anyway, Gambit decides to help her out. They end up battling a UFO, a leather-clad dominatrix (I’m only kind of kidding), and her rabid vampires. Storm also flies a plane with her half-remembered mutant powers, which somehow works.

After finally escaping, the adult Gambit and child Storm just sort of hang out for a while, stealing and thieving as necessary. Eventually, Storm leads them both back to the X-Men. Everyone else seems cool with it, though I think I would have a lot of questions if a young teammate came back with a mysterious adult in a latex suit and trenchcoat.
