The Simpsons Predicted Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Back in 2012

After a well-received performance at Super Bowl LI, Lady Gaga put herself back on the map. But it looks like The Simpsons gave her the inspiration!

The Simpsons are older than I am despite depicting Bart Simpson as a ten-year-old for the past 28 seasons. They don’t age and manage to remain relevant to pop culture by satirizing basically everything. When it comes to The Simpsons, nothing is off limits. In fact, many consider it an honor when their yellow alternate egos appear on The Simpsons.

But The Simpsons tend to be ahead of the times as well. For example, they predicted Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance years ago. In case you missed it, she dropped from the ceiling, superimposed some drones behind her, sang all her best hits, and made a few tasteful costume changes. There were many moments that felt inspiring, but a lot of them were done by The Simpsons … more than four years ago.

So, let’s compare here. At the Super Bowl LI halftime show, Lady Gaga started on the roof with a few hundred drones behind her. The drone choreography (is it drone-ography?) was taped a week in advance, but nobody really needs to know that. (That’s the bottom left photo.) Afterward, she dropped into the stadium (top left). As you can see in the side-by-side comparison, The Simpsons animated a similar stunt in the season 23 finale, “Lisa Goes Gaga”.

Here’s a clip from The Simpsons episode:

And here’s last night’s Super Bowl performance from Lady Gaga:

Admittedly, they’re pretty similar.

And even though Lady Gaga herself voiced her role in The Simpsons, it doesn’t quite match up to the energy of her performance from last night. In addition, The Simpsons didn’t start a conversation the same way Lady Gaga did last night.

Maybe Fox orchestrated it all from the very beginning.
