Jane and Michael – Jane the Virgin
The Setup
Given that Jane the Virgin is based on and replicates the style of a telenovela, there are more than a few major dramatic moments, including a couple of proposals. But the one that’s on my list is the very first one. It happens in the very first episode, entitled “Chapter One.” So by the time this proposal happens, we really haven’t known Jane and Michael for very long. But we do know that she’s been accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine pap smear. And we know she has no idea what to do about it. But after a lot of back and forth, she comes to a decision.
The Moment
At the end of the episode, Jane shows up at the police station where Michael works. Before she proposes, she tells him that she’s keeping the baby and giving it to the biological father, Raphael. And once Michael tells her he’s okay with that, she begins her proposal. “Instead of telling you the reasons that I love you, I’m going to tell you the reasons I don’t. I don’t love you because you’re smart and kind. I don’t love you because you’re hardworking and competitive and way too defensive…I don’t love you because you’re incredibly sexy. I love you because you’re my best friend, and I want to grow old with you. And right now, I am confused about every single thing in my life, except you.”
Of course, it ends up getting more confusing for her later. But this proposal is excellent. First, because Jane asserted what she wanted and gave him a chance to say that he couldn’t accept that. Second, because Jane sees him as a touchstone. It’s okay for her life to be a mess, because she knows she has him to come back to regardless, and vice versa. And despite ups and downs, that is what carries them throughout the series. So basically, Team Raphael can take a seat. #TeamMichael4eva #Sorrynotsorry
