Marvel Wants to Conquer Gaming with the Help of Square Enix

Seemingly unsatisfied with its own cinematic universe, Marvel now looks to take on gaming with the help of none other than Square Enix.

There may very well be a realm where DC Comics currently holds the advantage over Marvel: video games. Although Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite should come out this year, it’s still not just straight Marvel. Meanwhile, Injustice 2 dropped a massive trailer earlier this month that promised two major villains in the form of Brainiac and Darkseid. The ball, thus, was in Marvel’s court.

They responded today with not the announcement of just one game, but what they’re calling a “multi-year, multi-game licensing agreement” with none other than Square Enix, based solely on Marvel properties. Naturally, this did actually come with something purporting to be a game announcement.

Check it out below:

It does kind of look like a follow-up to Captain America: Civil War, though. Yes, we know that neither Thor nor the Hulk showed up in that movie, because they’re off doing Thor: Ragnarok or pre-Ragnarok. In fact, we have little more than a working title — The Avengers Project — as well as that ever-present marketing tool, a hashtag. (#Reassemble.)

Additionally, it sounds like the game is being designed to last, with the announcement saying, “[the game] will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come”. Since Marvel vs. Capcom may very well have closed off the fighting genre, what’s left? Will players get to play out a full action game? Or will we instead go into the MMORPG format? (However, even that seems a bit done.) It could very well be an open-world type concept, borrowing heavily from RPGs for that aspect.

Perhaps the game is meant to sync up with Avengers: Infinity War as some sort of tie-in? Maybe it’s an alternate take.

Whatever it is, we won’t actually get to know more about this or any of the Square Enix Marvel games until 2018 at the very earliest.
