5. Her Causes

Michelle Obama has been very busy in the eight years she has been in the White House. It is typical for most First Ladies to focus their energy on one program they are passionate about but that would not be the case with FLOTUS. She took on the role of First Lady with gusto. Her primary cause at the start of President Obama’s presidency was supporting military families. President Obama and his wife did not support the war in Iraq but understood military members and families should always have support. She also understood the need for higher education and better health.

Her Let’s Move initiative addresses our national obesity problem and nutrition. She also spearheaded the campaign for the FDA to modernize the Nutrition Facts on food labels. Understanding that in today’s economy, a high school diploma is not going to cut it anymore, Mrs. Obama created the Reach Higher program. It is an effort to inspire every student in America to take charge of their future by completing their education past high school. It could be in the form of a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university.

She launched a global initiative called Let Girls Learn in partnership with the State Department, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Peace Corps, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, as well as other agencies to address the dilemmas preventing young girls from getting a proper education. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden also launched a nationwide project in 2011 called Joining Forces. The initiative called on all Americans to support service members, veterans, and their families.
