100 Years of Beauty’s ’80s Retrospective is Here

Rather than go through another set of different looks throughout 100 years, the series 100 Years of Beauty tried something else: an ’80s-only episode.

We’ve come to expect a general set of things from Cut Video’s 100 Years of Beauty episodes: they’ll pick a country or a specific group of people, sit a model down, and then create different looks based on different decades. However, the most recent episode went for a more comparative look at one specific decade.

What better way to start than the era of big hair and even bigger cans of hairspray: the 1980s?

Check out the video below:

Well, okay, not everyone had big hair. You’ll note that Hawai’i and the Philippines are among those countries represented in the video that keep a relatively-scaled back look. That has to be to balance out East Germany, which somehow managed to pull off a look that reminds us of nothing less than Goku going Super Saiyan in Dragonball Z, just with less grunting and more eyeliner.

Notably, Cut Video also made sure to give a few nods to the men as well. Additionally, check out all of that sweet crimping action. Some looks, like from the United States and Northern Ireland, actually managed to combine crimped and big hair. Of course, the models all did their best vogue as well, though we can’t say they really let their bodies move to the music as much as Madonna would have liked.

Interestingly, the end of the video also has a request for viewers to help decide what comes next for the series — more men, more of these sorts of videos, or even helping with research into new videos. Personally, I’d love to see more of these single-decade videos, comparing looks across the world.
