The latest Masterpiece historical drama, Victoria, premieres tonight. Here are the details for you to watch it all unfold online or on TV.

With Sherlock coming to a close tonight and Poldark not returning until later this year at best, PBS’ Sunday Masterpiece block needs another British import. Fortunately, they have one in the form of Victoria, which opens just as the queen ascends to the throne at the rather tender age of 18.

Naturally, the synopsis of this premiere episode focuses on just how young she is even as she takes the reins of power, and it clearly mentions people plotting to manipulate her. The Masterpiece schedule makes it far more explicit that her family will be part of these manipulations. Just because she has a crown on her head doesn’t mean she’s safe from an overbearing mother, after all. (There might be some vague spoilers at the link for those unfamiliar with the life of Queen Victoria.)

Of course, Victoria will also meet probably the second-most-important (sorry, Prince Albert) character in the series in this premiere: Lord Melbourne, her first prime minister. Rufus Sewell has taken on that role for this series.

This episode will be two hours in length, as is fitting for a series premiere. Next week, the show will move to airing one-hour episodes. Victoria will have seven episodes for this first season, with the finale airing on Feb. 19. For those worrying about how the show will fit such a long reign into seven episodes, worry not. A second season is already in the works for both ITV and Masterpiece to air.
