With Sherlock returned to our screens last night, here’s the trailer for episode two of the mini-season, entitled “The Lying Detective”
Last night’s Sherlock was a doozy, no? (If you haven’t seen it yet, you should turn back, because spoilers are everywhere.) if you have seen it, or just need to know why everyone’s upset this morning, check out our recap here.
With last night’s shock!death (or really not so shocking, since Gatiss and Moffat were clearly tired of making Holmes and Watson and Watson work as a team), the rest of the season will be set on its ear for a little bit. Can John forgive Sherlock? Can Sherlock figure out how to get back in Watson’s good graces?
We don’t know the answer to that, but this week’s trailer does promise the long awaited debut of Toby Jones as this season’s bad guy. Check it out.
For the hardcore Sherlock Holmes fans, “The Lying Detective” is clearly a play on the title of the 1913 short story “The Dying Detective”. And the synopsis promises that in fact this story will be “loosely based” on that original tale. (Much like last night’s was “loosely based” on “The Six Napoleons.”) In the original story, Watson is summoned to Baker Street to find his friend has not eaten or drunk anything in three days–in fact he believes himself to have contracted a fatal disease and demands that Watson bring him and specialist by the name of Culverton Smith. Smith is then brought to the “dying” detective in order to treat him, but, as always, there is far more to the story than it seems.

Toby Jones plays the role of Culverton Smith, which has been hyped as ‘The Purest Evil’ by Moffat and company prior to the beginning of the season. We’ll have to see how those chnages to the story shake out next Sunday at 9pm on PBS.
