The BBC’s New Year Trailer Shows Off Poldark, Doctor Who, and More

Do our eyes detect snippets of Poldark, Doctor Who, and Sherlock in the BBC New Year’s trailer? Let’s break down what there is to see.

2017 promises to be a pretty good year across the pond for the BBC. Not only has Sherlock finally come back, there will be a new season of Doctor Who, the return of Poldark, and more. What better way to build up some interest than to release a teasing trailer?

Check said trailer out below:

First off, did you spot the Tom Hardy? The BBC certainly played that one up, didn’t they? Hardy actually plays the lead role in the TV series Taboo. We Yanks won’t have to suffer through any wait for it, though — the series premieres on Jan. 10 on FX here in the States.

As for Sherlock, there really wasn’t much to be had from there, though it did include Benedict Cumberbatch telling us about how things are coming and Martin Freeman asking for enlightenment to kick the trailer off. Sherlock actually started airing Jan. 1 on both the BBC and PBS.

The Twelfth Doctor and his new companion Bill, played by Pearl Mackie, also show up for a few shots. Doctor Who returns sometime in the spring, according to a first-look trailer available on BBC America’s website.

Alas, there isn’t much of Poldark to be seen, though we interestingly spot Demelza standing alone on the beach even before Ross gets a chance to ride dramatically on the cliffs. Presumably things will be a bit testy between the two of them, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering what Ross did in the second season. The BBC hasn’t said much more than 2017, but the fact that PBS has talked it up already makes us suspect that we’ll see it at a similar time as we did the second season — that is, a couple weeks after the BBC starts airing it.

Other shows appearing include Call the Midwife and Doctor Foster. Did you also spot former Great British Bake Off cast members Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc, as well as the previous winner Nadiya Hussein?

So did we. Your move, Channel 4.
