The Criminal Justice System

The United States criminal justice system often fails. And My Favorite Murder isn’t afraid to call them out on it. Whether it’s not taking rape and sexual assault seriously or letting murderers out on parole, Karen and Georgia don’t shy away from mentioning when justice wasn’t served. When it comes to sexual assault and rape, sometimes the perpetrators are believed over the victims or simply aren’t punished harshly enough for the crime. Remember that whole Brock Turner thing? Like that. Sometimes the cases discussed on the show had major red flags that police and investigators missed while others were let off early on parole despite committing violent crimes. How is rape not given a harsher punishment? Karen and Georgia voice these questions almost every episode.

Another pattern brought to light on My Favorite Murder is the ridiculous statue of limitations laws when it comes to sexual assault cases. Luckily, this issue is finally beginning to be addressed in a few states since high profile cases like Bill Cosby’s where many of the victims weren’t able to press criminal charges due to the statute of limitations have begun to surface. The fact that My Favorite Murder gives a platform to discuss issues like this is yet another reason to love it.
