The West Wing

Given our current presidential situation, a reboot of The West Wing could either be one of the greatest things to happen in television history, or it could be a horrible, terrible idea that makes us all regret that we have eyes.

The Aaron Sorkin drama was primarily set in the White House, and featured an idealistic President Bartlet and his support staff that is the stuff of political fantasies. In fact, President Bartlet was such an amazing leader, I was tempted to just write him in on the ballot in the 2016 election.

The fast-paced, academic nature of the show gave it a reputation for being a little esoteric, but it that was the best thing about this show. It never dumbed it down for us, nor did it play to the lowest common denominator. Notorious for its lack of exposition and explanation, it was one of the smartest and well-written shows on television. In fact, everything I know about American politics, I learned from those seven seasons of The West Wing.

I’d like to see a complete reimagining of the series from Sorkin – new cast and everything. I wouldn’t be completely disappointed if it was set in the near future, just to avoid any sticky parallels and allegories.
