Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy Schmidt is always a delightful little ray of sunshine. For some of us Grinches, we need this kind of nonconsensual positivity. Even when the lump of coal in our chests is constricting, as we speak, Kimmy is there to lift our spirits.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about a woman who spent 15 years in an underground bunker as the captive of a cult. She bursts out of captivity with a smile and a can-do attitude, ready to take on the world. She maintains her grin and rose-colored outlook, and she never relents at looking at the bright side. Even as she faces a lot of romantic, professional and emotional setbacks, she still keeps it 100% upbeat. I want to hate her for it, but I just can’t. Just take a look at that smile people. I’m a Grinch, folks, not a monster.

I admire Kimmy, and sometimes need reminding that not everything is awful. Sometimes I can’t even get through the line at Target without cursing humanity under my breath and feeling bleak over our shared futures. Kimmy was abused and kidnapped for over a dozen years, and still finds the courage to wear neon. We should all be more like Kimmy.
