Season 3: Nicole’s Cyborg

Season 3 was the first majorly watched season of Face Off, but it was also one of their accidental biggest disasters. In trying to woo in larger and larger audiences, SyFy decided that not only would we, the viewers, be allowed to vote on the winner, a la Food Network Star or American Idol, the finale would also be broadcast live.

They never made that mistake again. There is a reason that in 15 seasons, Project Runway has never allowed the masses to dial or text or go online and vote for their winner. There is also a reason they have never done a live show. Heidi Klum likes the soft focus editing affords her, and McKenzie Westmore does too. Furthermore, the judges had a clear favorite in Laura Tyler, and home audiences never vote for the frontrunner. (The show then did an entire season two cycles later of “Rookies vs Veterans,” which was clearly engineered from the get go to correct this error.) But if you want to know why we all voted for Nicole after she was brought back, it was for cyborg looks like this one, which even Glenn called the coolest thing she’d done on the show before or after her elimination.
