Barenaked Ladies feat. Sarah McLachlan, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/ We Three Kings”

This is, undoubtedly, my favorite Christmas song of all-time. On paper, it’s nothing really to look twice at, but when you hear the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan mix their vocals and smash-up two classic Christmas tunes, you’ll understand.

My dad actually turned me on to this song. One Christmas, many many years ago, probably while driving through town, he turned the radio up and said, “I love this song!” That’s when I fell in love with it.

The song is distcinctly jazzy with the full sound of an upright bass coming through pretty much the entire song. Sarah’s vocals add another depth to the mash-up, and together, the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah have, in my opinion, one of the most underrated Christmas songs of all time.

"God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay For Jesus Christ, our Savior was born on Christmas Day To save us all from Satan’s powers when we were gone astray Glad tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Glad tidings of comfort and joy In Bethlehem, in Israel this blessed Babe was born And laid within a manger upon this blessed morn The which His Mother Mary did nothing take in scorn"
