17. Captain Phasma

Might as well get the biggest disappointment out of the way first.

Now, let’s be fair. The Force Awakens introduced a lot of new characters and there just wasn’t enough time to give Captain Phasma a proper storyline. Further, her shiny helmet doesn’t offer a full range of vision. Without peripherals, Captain Phasma couldn’t have anticipated that Chewbacca would jump out of the shadows and attack her.

However, that doesn’t mean she had to fold so easily. I can’t help but envision J.J. Abrams sitting in the editing bay, looking at the clock and realizing that they couldn’t drag out the scene any longer. “Just have her lower the shields, so the rebels can come in and so on and so forth,” he said. He might’ve thought it was a simple scene with an excellent callback to A New Hope. (Trash compactor, anyone?)

Except here’s the thing — that scene made Captain Phasma look like a total weakling. Most Captains don’t just throw their hands in the air and give up. She could’ve put up more of a fight, or at the very least, offered to die instead of letting Starkiller Base be blown to smithereens. Sound an alarm or something, please. Plus, it made women everywhere look bad.

Luckily, we know that Captain Phasma will return in Episode VIII in all her shiny glory. Hopefully, with a vengeance and adequate screentime.
