You Call Yourself a Free Spirit, a Wild Thing, and You’re Terrified Somebody’s Gonna Stick You in a Cage

Once Holly is released from jail, Paul has the unfortunate task of telling her that Jose is not going to marry her and that all her plans are now changed. Still, Holly is determined to go to Brazil even though Paul tells her that she cannot leave the country.

Now, this scene has the most memorable quote of the entire movie. Paul calls out Holly, telling her that she is the one stopping herself. “You call yourself a free spirit, a wild thing, and you’re terrified somebody’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you’re already in that cage. You built it yourself.”

Paul also tells Holly that he loves her again and when she says “So what?” he responds with “So what? So plenty.” It is the moment that Paul realizes that their love can be enough for one another and he’s trying to get Holly to see that.

Paul finally gives up and leave the car after she gets rid of Cat in the pouring rain but the whole scene is what most people remember from the movie. The two of them love one another but they’re too afraid of truly being in love to really do anything about it.
