6. Michelle Lovretta

Ahhh, the inspiration behind the beloved Lost Girl. In an interview with The TV Junkies, she claims she was first deterred from film because “the film industry in general is pretty disrespectful to writers, regardless of gender.” At the same time she realized this, she found shows like Buffy and Xena, and fell in love with strong, leading ladies on television. “So, I happily hitched my wagon to television and haven’t looked back,” she claims. And we are so happy she did, because it eventually led to Lost Girl.

This Canadian supernatural drama fantasy series is good. Like, really good. Not only because it has the representation much needed in the world, it has a story like no other. Bo (Anna Silk) was the first bisexual lead on any TV show, opening doors to so many. Lovretta had rules for writing for her bisexual lead: “Sexual orientation is not discussed, and never an issue. No slut shaming – Bo is allowed to have sex outside of relationships. Bo’s male and female partners are equally viable. Bo is capable of monogamy, when desired. Both genders are to be (adoringly!) objectified — equal opportunity eye candy FTW.” And in my opinion, I think every show should have these rules.
