How I Met Your Mother is a show that speaks to a very specific generation, and it’s humor is almost solely dependent on the participation of that generation. And, man, this  generation (also known as Generation X and MY generation) came out to support this silly little show about a group of friends.

As a framing device, Ted tells his children about the events leading up to when he met their mother, but this is really only super important in the first and last season. In the meantime, the show is about this friend group figuring how to live life, and just exist in the world.

All you need to know about this episode of How I Met Your Mother is that Barney gets slapped. And it’s glorious.

Thankfully, HIMYM avoids the tendencies of shows to get super sentimental around the holidays, and stays pretty faithful to the overall tone of the series. By the time the third season rolled around, the concept of the “slap” was well established. In “Slapsgiving” Marshal is terrorizing Barney about the upcoming third installment.

It’s funny without being cloying – something HIMYM did pretty well in those early seasons.
