28. Dr. Joan Watson- Elementary

Elementary, a drama that gives us a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes, stars Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. This CBS series premiered in 2012 and just began its fifth season this October. The show follows Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) as he assists the New York City police department in solving crimes. He’s a recovering drug addict and Dr. Watson is his sober companion. Being a former surgeon, she was hired by Holmes father to help keep him sober and healthy. She gets overly involved with the cases he works on so after awhile, she becomes his apprentice, helping him solve the mysteries.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Lucy Liu talks about how complex and layered her character is, and how excited she was for it to evolve over each season. “Oh, does she have layers! She’s got lots of issues,” Liu states. “It’s good though because it’s not revealed right away — you want to tease bits of it, otherwise the audience will get bored. Why was she kicked out? We might not know for a while. I think in the first season, we’ll have to reveal a little bit about what happened to her.
