Rosa Parks T-Shirt

For: The feminist with a sense of humor (because they exist!)

Price: $20.00

It was the “Nah” heard round the world. We all know the story of Rosa Parks. Or we should, if our elementary school teachers were worth their salt. She refused to move to the back of the bus, the designated area for black people, when a white person wanted her seat. She was arrested for it, and, of course, became a de facto civil rights leader.

In her autobiography, My Story, Parks describes the world-changing incident like this: “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

The thing I love most about this shirt is how simple it is. It reflects how simple Parks’s refusal was in the first place, and how simple protest and resistance can be. “Nah.” That’s all you have to do to make a difference. Rosa Parks wasn’t making speeches or organizing protests. But she did what she could do to resist oppression. She said no.

As such, this shirt is perfect for your feminist friend who takes on ignorance and hate with sarcasm and humor. This gift is for the friend who says “Nah.” To patriarchy. To racism. To homophobia. To people who seek to bring her down. She simply refuses and keeps on living her life, just like Parks did.

She’ll Love It If: She is a huge fan of politically engaged comedians, like 2 Dope Queens’s Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson; she serves up activism with a side of snark regularly; her response to white male nonsense is a deadpan to rival Jim Halpert.
