Poldark: 3 Questions for Episode 7

The upcoming episode of Poldark promises to be a major turning point. Here are 3 questions we have based on the last episode and the preview.

Miss episode 6 of Poldark Season 2? No worries. Culturess has a recap waiting for you.

Prepare yourselves: Masterpiece’s schedule says that viewer discretion is advised for episode 7 of Season 2 of Poldark. If my memory serves, even the stocking scene from episode 5 didn’t get such a warning.

In other words, this sounds like it may get…dicey…to put it mildly. As per usual, we’ve put together three questions covering the major story lines and where we think they’re going.

Will Wheal Grace actually fail?

According to Ross in episode 6, they have two weeks of coal left before pumping the water out of Wheal Grace has to stop. As he’s sunk a lot of money (and also a Francis…too soon?) into this venture, it has to turn a profit. Otherwise, he’ll be back into deep financial straits instead of the medium-sized ones he’s in now.

However, the preview strikes notes of hope. Apparently, tin may still lurk in the mine, and though it’s no copper, it’s something at least. Caroline’s bailed Ross out once. Elizabeth can’t help him, either, now that she has no financial interest in the mine and probably no money to spare anyway. Mark’s knowledge proved useless.

This might very well be it for the Poldarks and mining.

Poldark, do not throw away your shot. (You don’t know how irritating I find it that “Ross Poldark” doesn’t have the same number of syllables as “Alexander Hamilton”.)

Is Caroline coming back?

“I shall never see you again,” as Caroline writes to Dwight in her farewell letter, seems pretty final. However, it seems like the law might take some issue with the death of Charlie, who turned out to be the informant on the smuggling ring.

What better way to summon Caroline Penvenen back to Cornwall than by putting her handsome doctor in trouble? Nooses do not suit him. Of course, this isn’t really a problem that she can throw money at, either.

Perhaps she’ll dramatically swoop in to plead for his life? Or she’ll start talking to judges on the sly, as Demelza did earlier in the season. Don’t underestimate Caroline — her feelings may have been hurt, but there’s still a spark there. Dwight’s being arrested may provide the tinder to coax it back into a flame.

Will Warleggan finally bother to propose?

Poor Elizabeth. Not only does she have to put up with Warleggan, she also has to deal with his minion coming around every five minutes to convey his master’s concerns. We’re with Aunt Agatha on this one: why can’t the man come around himself?

To push it a bit further, why can’t he bother to ask Elizabeth to marry him? She appears to be out of mourning, and he’s shown interest in her constantly. What benefit does he get from leaving her unmarried?

Incidentally, we suspect that Elizabeth may end up being the cause of Ross and Demelza having a fight, albeit indirectly. That’s probably where the viewer discretion warning comes in — either with the fight or with what happens if Ross shows up to Trenwith.
