Lloyd Dobler (Say Anything)
If you’ve ever seen Say Anything , there are two things you really remember from it. One, most plans crash during take off or landing so once you hear the ding of the seatbelt sign, you’re in the clear and two, the famous stereo scene.
What’s great about the stereo scene is that it literally has nothing to do with the plot of the movie but it is the most romantic thing about the entire film. Lloyd goes to stand outside of his girlfriend’s window with a radio above his head. He plays In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel because that’s the song she lost her virginity to him to and he just stands there.
Nothing happens. He literally just stands there and she hears it and the scene ends. Lloyd Dobler is actually more romantic when they are on the plane together and he’s help her get over her fear of flying. But no one really remembers or comments on that, just the scene of him holding up the radio.
Say Anything is great for a lot of reason but Lloyd is the kind of love interest who just does things because he thinks it’s right and it makes him a very earnest and amazing love interest for an 80s film.
