Paul Varjak (Breakfast At Tiffany’s)

The novel version of Breakfast At Tiffany’s finds Paul Varjak being gay. Since the movie was made at a time when that probably wouldn’t have been a very successful choice, they changed the story of Holly and Paul to be one of love.

The thing about Paul is that he truly loves Holly for all her weird quirks and everything that makes her Holly Golightly. She is aloof and strange and he doesn’t necessarily understand her but he wants to be near her and help her and love her. He doesn’t want to put her in a cage, after all.

While Breakfast At Tiffany’s is amazing (it is my favorite movie), there are some faults to it. It is very much a typical love story of the time, no real backing to the declarations of love and a little forced but there is something extremely romantic in their love story.

She is just trying to survive and thinks the only way she can do that is by falling in love with someone with a lot of money. Paul wants her to see that life isn’t just about money and what you have but rather who you have in  your life and he declares it in one of the most amazing rain scenes of all time.
