13. Lorelai & Emily Take on Trix

Season 3, Episode 10 “That’ll Do, Pig”

There is nothing like an overbearing family member to bring two people together. Emily and Lorelai are never closer (or funnier) than when they are on the same side against Richard’s mother Trix (Marion Ross). Trix is another strong, independent Gilmore woman. She has opinions and is not afraid to let anyone, especially Emily, know about them. Most of the time Lorelai enjoys seeing her mother bossed around by her Gran, but sometimes she does take pity on Emily.

Emily is able to get a little more insight into her relationship with her daughter from this experience. Sometimes it takes being hurt open your eyes to your own wrongdoings. While Emily is critical, most of the time she does seem to come from a place of love. She just has a funny way of showing it.

Usually I don’t condone girl on girl crimes, but this one is just too good to pass up. Lorelai teaches Emily how to use humor to deal with criticism. She knows it works because she has used it again Emily all these years. Emily heeds her advice and to fight back she starts eating very slowly, which goes against Trix’s very strict digestive schedule. It’s a small moment of victory that helps bring Lorelai and Emily together.
