18. Lorelai & Mrs. Kim

Season 7, Episode 16 “Will You Be My Lorelai Gilmore?”

Lorelai and Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda) are about as different as two people can be. They are not really friends, but are bonded together by their motherhood. Both only want what is best for their daughters. Lorelai has always acted as a sort of surrogate mother for Lane offering the kind of advice and support Mrs. Kim could not give. However, when Lane and her mother fight over how Lane should raise her children Lorelai steps in to fix things between the two other women.

Lorelai is one of the few people who can get through to Mrs. Kim. She understands where Mrs. Kim’s strictness comes from. She also knows what that kind of upbringing can do to a child from her own experience. Her ability to see both sides makes her a perfect moderator in their disagreements.

The bond between mothers is a fierce one. They are united by their love of their children, which can occasionally put them at odds. Throughout the years Lorelai and Mrs. Kim have never really agreed on parenting tips, but they do respect each other. Deep down Mrs. Kim knows Lorelai’s intentions are good. In her own way she appreciates Lorelai occasionally trying to help so that she and Lane do not end up like Lorelai and Emily.
