The Inbetweeners

The Inbetweeners follows the story of a group of four teenage friends at Rudge Park Comprehensive School.  Will, Simon, Neil and Jay must all attempt navigate the typical perils of adolescence, including climbing the social ladder, avoiding bullies, handling their schoolwork and, of course, trying to hook up with girls.

This show is probably the silliest offering on this list, and not everyone is going to like it. It’s a stone’s throw from toilet humor, full of all sorts of juvenile, vulgar and or straight-up gross out comedy. There’s rather a lot of crass language. But The Inbetweeners is really hilarious. And every so often it’s surprisingly touching, with odd, interesting observations about life and society that resonate no matter how far you are from a schoolroom.

Simon Bird’s performance as the prissy and awkward Will is especially wonderful. And all four leads have great chemistry together, so even though they’re all from different backgrounds their friendship feels very realistic.

The series was so popular that it even spawned two movies – The Inbetweeners and The Inbetweeners 2 – in which the boys go on vacation to Crete and Australia, respectively. That goes about as well as you’d expect.
