#12: “Feeling Kinda Naughty”

This girl-crush anthem gone wrong is one of the most absurd numbers of the first season. What starts as a night out between new best pals, Valencia and Rebecca, soon turns into a crazy, stalker-y, uncomfortably hilarious song wherein Rebecca chronicles all the, uhhhh, fun she wants to have with her gal pal! This “fun” includes, but is not limited to: stealing all of Valencia’s baby teeth to make a retainer, taking measurements of Valencia’s body and getting surgery to look exactly like her, and locking Valencia in a basement…all in attempt to get closer to her! Female friendship, am I right?!?! In reality, this song is a sharp parody of the sometimes seemingly alarming (but mostly pretty magical) rate at which women bond, complete with compliments that go a bit too far and future plans that are a tad too specific. And it’s the kind of darkly comedic scene that only a super-smart, attuned, empowering chick like Rachel Bloom on a progressive show like Crazy Ex-GF could expertly pull off. Rachel Bloom: don’t make this weird, but I’ve kinda got a girl crush on you.
