#4: “Getting Bi”

Everything about this bisexuality anthem is pure, wonderful, magical, queer gold. Darryl Whitefeather, the head of the firm for which Rebecca and Paula work, is in the midst of a divorce. And in his introspection, quest for new friends, and total lack of self-consciousness, Darryl comes to the sudden realization that he’s bi- and what better way to share the news than with a full-scale rock number during a staff meeting? This song is super fun while still making crucial points about the reality of bisexuality, and addressing head-on the ridiculous lines of questioning LGBTQ folks are forced to endure when coming out. Darryl makes sure to point out that his situation is very real, totally valid, and actually opens up doors in his life rather than oppressing him. It’s refreshing to see an older male portray an LGBTQ character who is not only proud to be who he is, but who is celebrating new beginnings rather than struggling with the late-in-life realization. And it’s even more refreshing when it gives us a new song to scream-sing at people when they’re questioning bi folks’ validity.

Lyric highlight:

“I’m gettin’ bi and it’s something I’d like to demystify. It’s not a phase; I’m not confused. Not indecisive- I don’t have the ‘gotta choose’ blues.”
