26. Fear The Walking Dead- Victor Strand

It’s hard to find a way to discuss sexuality in an apocalypse, so AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead isn’t. They introduced us to Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) at the end of season 1 without mentioning who he’s attracted to. In season 2, it’s nonchalantly thrown in that he’s dating a man, Thomas Abigail (Dougray Scott). Victor’s main storyline through season 2 is to reunite with him.

Victor is a man of many words, and each word holds meaning. He’s a bit of a mysterious character but has exceptional judgment in people. This comes in handy as Fear the Walking Dead tells the story of what happened before Rick Grimes woke up from his coma. This spinoff of The Walking Dead is focusing heavily on the dynamics between family, friends, and strangers. And now lovers.

Here’s why I like this character. While most queer folks on TV lose their life or their loved one’s life to accelerate a straight characters storyline, this one didn’t do that. He lost Thomas. But Victor did it on his own terms, to accelerate his own plotline. Thomas didn’t die to enhance the group. He died to make Victor realize what’s important, and how he’s going to survive the end of the world
