Leonard Cohen, You Want It Darker, TBA 2016
Peaky Blinders fans might recognize “You Want It Darker”. The show sampled the song earlier this year. “You Want It Darker” is the title track from Leonard Cohen’s new album, You Want It Darker, out sometime this year (I hope). YWID is produced by Leonard’s son, Adam.
"If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game If you are the healer, it means I’m broken and lame If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame You want it darker We kill the flame Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name Vilified, crucified, in the human frame A million candles burning for the help that never came You want it darker Hineni, hineni I’m ready, my lord -“You Want It Darker”"
According to Rolling Stone, this new album is a masterpiece, with some people who have already heard the nine new compositions calling it “classic Cohen.” If the new single is any indication, the album will be hauntingly memorable.
In fact, it may be a sort of death note from Cohen, who earlier this year wrote a letter to Marianne Ihlen, the woman behind “Bird on a Wire” and “So Long, Marianne”, saying:
"“Well Marianne it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.”"
