Bastille’s New Album Wild World Reviewed & Ranked
Track 17: “Campus”, 3:03
This song has a couple of things going against it: it sounds and feels over-produced. Starting with the very first phrase, with the weird auto-tuney singing and then again towards the end with the synth fade-out. The thing about Bastille that I fell in love with is their sound- instrumental heavy with a lot of drum work and strong vocals.
I can also do without the clapping.
Now, for the good:
We get a hint of the percussion from old Bastille, and the lyrics are interesting, telling a story about how everyone deals with anonymity, even (and especially) when we’re snuggled against those we’re alike (minds on a campus, men in fields, etc.).
"“Just another brain on the campus Just another set of ideas Just another theory in motion Waiting there for you to steal He must be so lonely, knowing what you know Man, it must be lonely, keeping it on the low”"
This song allows lead singer Dan Smith to showcase his beautiful falsetto voice, and definitely listen out for some impressive guitar work starting at 1:18. There is also some awesome bars of orchestral instruments and piano at the very end. I wish they had left the synth crap on the editing room floor, though.
