Track 13: “Snakes”, 3:17
You ever feel a little bit like you just wanna give up? You know it’s not the answer, and you feel a little guilty for feeling like you do, but you’d give just about anything to poof! be gone? Yep, me too. And this song is a sort-of-anthem for anyone who can relate. Which should be just about all of us.
"“Cause it’s easier to bury My head in the sand sometimes Yes, it’s easier to bury My head in the sand sometimes And I know, I know, I know It’s not the right way to go But I pray for the ground to swallow me whole”"
“Snakes” represents all the crap in the world that try to poison us, keep us down, consume us, and make us crazy. The image is of literal snakes biting at the narrator’s heels, but these literal snakes can be metaphors for anything. The song itself is uptempo and bright, a cheer for us to keep our heads above water, to stomp away the snakes, and stay sane.
And, could this song be slightly political? Perhaps speaking about the historical Brexit vote, or the virulent political climate in the US:
“Now these days are feeling dark/ We’re struggling to figure out last year/ When the woman on the news keeps saying things that no one wants to hear.”
