Bastille’s New Album Wild World Reviewed & Ranked
Track 6: “Power”, 3:29
How about a song to say to the world, or to whatever thing holds power over you, “No more!”. That’s what “Power” is.
I love the slow build of this song, starting with just a little guitar and a little percussion and a voice, then building to a dynamic and layered flood of sound. Bastille is really good at that, layering a little at a time until you feel nearly overwhelmed by all of the sound swirling around you.
"“Pain, just synapses firing in our brains So when you cut me, cut me deep Hurt the ones you love the most easily Cause in time we show our Achilles’s heels”"
Now might also be a good time to point out phrasing. I like to take a first listen of a song or album without having lyrics up. Just the music. When you hear Bastille’s lyrics against the music, it makes complete sense. THEN, when I open the lyrics and read them (either with or without the music on in the background) it’s hard for me to imagine how they fit all of those syllables into phrases. Maybe it’s a British thing, but their phrasing is unique. It’s not straightforward, which is part of why they are interesting and fun to listen to.
