Will they be, in some way, less innocent?

A few police detectives get judgmental while researching murder victims and Stella is quick to point out that they aren’t there to judge. They’re actually just there to solve the crime, not decide whether they agree with the victim’s life choices. Does the victim being on a kinky dating site really make her any less a victim? That would be a no.

Stella mentioned early in Season 1 that victim-blaming isn’t to be accepted saying: “What if he kills a prostitute next? Or a woman walking home drunk, late at night in a short skirt?” We’ve heard this argument before, haven’t we? In fact, this argument is used in many rape cases to discredit the victim and shift the blame to them instead of the person who actually committed the crime. The victim’s “innocence” has nothing to do with the fact that they’re a victim. Stella won’t let it fly saying, “will they be, in some way, less innocent, therefore less deserving, culpable?”

The answer is no. No one deserves it no matter what they’re wearing or doing. Thank you, Stella, for having our backs. We don’t deserve you but we appreciate all you’re doing to remove stigmas and cultural misconceptions. High five!
