Insecure – HBO – October 9

Issa Rae’s new HBO show Insecure is one of the best bets for new television this season, partially because we know what she’s capable of (or, we should). The comedic Youtube web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl”, which Rae created and stars in, proved to be a hilarious and all too real take on the uncomfortable situations that black women often face. The show won the coveted Shorty Award for Best Web Show in 2012 and garnered further critical acclaim for its representation of women of color. Rae described how she felt like her voice was missing from mainstream media to The Huffington Post in 2013, saying, “The Internet is where you can find what you’re not seeing in TV and film…I didn’t see enough content of color that I could relate to.”

Well, now, Issa Rae is making it happen on the small screen. Insecure, created by Rae and Larry Wilmore, is an authentic representation of the black female experience; though, Rae made sure to clarify to Time, it is “not the quintessential black-woman experience. It’s a very specific experience.” The first season will follow Rae’s character, also named Issa, as she struggles with her uncertain career path and rocky relationships. The series, which primarily stars people of color, promises to respond to social issues as well.

We can’t wait to watch this fully realized depiction of women of color! Insecure premieres on HBO on October 9.
