Jane the Virgin – The CW – October 17

Our favorite virgin is finally back for season three! Jane the Virgin is a comedy about Jane Villanueva, a woman in her early twenties who, inspired by her religion and her abuela, took a vow as a child not to have sex until she is married. However, in the first season, due to a mixup at the gynecologist’s office, she finds herself pregnant via accidental artificial insemination.

Jane the Virgin’s trademark telenovela-style melodramatic comedy makes it seriously unique, and its representation of women, especially Latina women, has been groundbreaking. Gina Rodriguez, the insanely inspiring and talented star, has won a Golden Globe for her role as Jane and, with highly anticipated films like Deepwater Horizon and Annihilation coming out soon, is set to become a bona fide movie star.

On screen, Jane shines as an example of a complex and realistic woman; she is a mother, a daughter, a granddaughter, a writer, a student, a lover, and a friend, all at once. The other Villanueva women, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and Alba (Ivonne Coll), also have complicated backgrounds and feelings. Even the female villains show outstanding complexity.

We are confident that Jane the Virgin will continue it’s astounding track record of representing women and the Latinx community in its next season. Season 3 premieres on the CW on October 17, but you can watch the first two seasons on Netflix now.
