4. Arya Stark: “Go the Distance”

"I will search the world, I will face its harms ‘Til I find my hero’s welcome waiting in your arms —Hercules"

Whenever I watch the Season 4 finale, as Arya stands on the ship taking her to Braavos, all I can hear is Hercules somewhere in the recesses of my mind. Arya has indeed gone the distance, to find her family, to find herself, to find anything that means something to her again. She’s been all over, nearly everywhere but the place she needs to be. Perhaps Arya doesn’t quite know where she belongs anymore. She needs her family to guide her back.

Arya’s entire journey has been about identity and belonging. And if you ask me, it’s leading her back home to Winterfell with what’s left of her family. The Starks belong together, and Arya and Sansa’s reunion is one that I can’t wait to see. Kindly imagine the soft swell of “Go the Distance” playing in the background when Arya and Sansa see each other again. Imagine it as Arya leaps into her sister’s arms as these two incredibly resilient women draw strength from each other. It’s only a picture in my head right now, but what a masterpiece it is. (Hint hint, GRRM.)

That, I think, is where Arya will find her hero’s welcome—in Sansa’s embrace, and in her brothers’ smiles.

Challenge: Listen to “Go the Distance” and think about Arya. Let’s see how many of you follow my lead and, at the very least, get misty-eyed about it.
