5. Tyrion Lannister: “One Last Hope”
"To be a true hero, kid, is a dying art Like painting a masterpiece, it’s a work of heart It takes more than sinew Comes down to what’s in you You have to continue to grow Now that’s more like it! —Hercules"
In regards to Tyrion, “One Last Hope” is twofold, in which Tyrion can be likened to either Hercules or Phil. So far, he’s certainly played the role of adviser well to Daenerys, but Tyrion is a hero in his own right as well. As the song says, being a hero “comes down to what’s in you,” and Tyrion’s had the makings of a hero all along.
Tyrion has succeeded and failed in equal measure. He’s given into his hubris and he’s never been any great shakes on the battlefield, but at the end of the day he’s got a heart of gold. And, okay, so I know he killed his own father, but Tywin Lannister was no Ned Stark, especially when it comes to how he treated his children. We can be horrified by the patricide and still admire Tyrion for finally breaking free from beneath his father’s oppressive thumb. Tyrion has tried and tried again to improve his lot in life, but he hits one wall after the next. Without Tywin around to orchestrate his every move, Tyrion is free to reach his full potential.
Along with other central heroes in Game of Thrones, Tyrion is among the downtrodden. But like Daenerys and the remaining Starks, he’s rising up to claim what we can only hope is his eventual triumph.
We’re down to one last hope, Tyrion, and we hope it’s you. After all, you are a fan favorite. I’m rather sure the internet would spontaneously combust if Tyrion doesn’t come out of this alive.
