The X-Files, episode: “Milagro;” screengrab via Fox.

#12: Milagro

Milagro is intense, moody, surprisingly Scully-centric, and deals with something the X-Files somehow manages to mostly stay away from: deliberate internal character development.

Mulder’s new neighbor, a writer, immediately takes a liking to Scully- probably because he’s a human being with eyes, ears, a heart that beats and a brain with appropriately firing synapses. But his interest quickly goes a bit too far, and she finds herself the subject of his latest novel. And while she’s put off by his obsession, she’s intrigued and strangely comforted by the way he seems to understand her inner workings so fully.

As things progress, Scully’s relationship with the author goes a bit too far, and Mulder is convinced that he’s not safe to be around. Mulder’s also probably super jealous, but mostly he’s right, because Mulder’s always right even when it doesn’t make any sense for him to be right. #TEAMSPOOKY!

In the end, the author and his bizarre connection to his murderous characters proves deadly for some, but not for Scully, who just barely gets away with her life. And though it seems like this guy was all bad news, his infatuation with and psychic understanding of Scully did give us (and Mulder) one wonderful thing: absolute proof.
