There may not be many people who remember this, but six years ago there was a little show on ABC called Undercovers. It was created by J.J. Abrams, and sadly it didn’t last long before getting cancelled – but if you’re searching for evidence that actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw can play a spy with the best of them, look no further than this show that was unfortunately on for only one season. In Undercovers, Mbatha-Raw plays a former CIA agent who is pulled back into the spy business along with her husband (Boris Kodjoe).
In addition to fun episodic plotlines and lots of cool spy gadgets, Undercovers also featured some wonderfully delightful and delicious chemistry between Mbatha-Raw and her co-star Kodjoe. While Abrams has said he regrets his decision to not go deeper with the characters sooner than he could’ve, this show was proof that Mbatha-Raw could lead a humorous and sexy arc. Some of the more recent James Bond movies have been gritty and hard, but the earlier films have had the same kind of light-heartedness as Undercovers – so I don’t have a difficult time envisioning Mbatha-Raw as Jane Bond whatsoever.
