It’s possible that most of my choices will wind up being entirely too obvious, but bear with me. In terms of actors who have experience playing spies, a perfect recent example is Hayley Atwell. Most of her early acting career was spent in stage productions as well as historical dramas, but it was likely after her role as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger that really brought her to the forefront of the internet’s attention. From there, she went on to reprise the character in several more installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even got her own solo (albeit short-lived) series Agent Carter, which followed the path of the previously established character in the films as she has to navigate a male-dominated work environment at the agency she clerks for.
In a sense, Peggy Carter is perhaps one of the closest existing characters to a female version of James Bond – at least over the course of her show. Time and time again, Atwell demonstrated her ability to chase after the bad guys – while in heels and looking effortless. She also had to deal with an unfair amount of sexism in her field, but in terms of creating a Jane Bond that would make for a pretty interesting story arc. How would she handle being one of few women in a land of dude double-ohs?
