15. Redcoat Uniforms

Terry Dresbach has free range over the costumes department of Outlander except when it came to the redcoat uniforms. The depiction of redcoats in films is a point of contention for her husband and Outlander Producer Ronald Moore. In a recent article for Popsugar, she talks about how passionate he is about historical accuracy in films.

"“For about a 100 years, when I have watched any movie with Ron that has redcoats in it, he starts yelling at the screen, “You see? You see that color? It’s wrong! It’s the wrong color! It’s candy-apple red. It should be scarlet! Look how clean he is!” Then he gives me long lectures about how the soldiers had to sew up the rips and tears.”"

Moore went as far as to rehash his grievances about redcoats to Dresbach when they started production on Outlander. This would have been where the show could have saved money on costumes by renting redcoats since they are readily available. Alas, they soon found out they could not use a single one. This was probably for the best since Moore insisted the clothing look dirty. To achieve a “dirty look”, Dresbach and her team are use sanding blocks, blow torches, and spray guns filled with paint and dye.  It is this eye for detail that makes the costumes in Outlander so great.
