5. The Red Dress

Many fans of the book, Dragonfly in Amber, were looking forward to seeing Jamie and Claire’s appearance in French Court. Most of all to see how the TV show translated the red dress Diana Gabaldon wrote about over 20 years ago. Jamie being young and very protective tells her “God, I can see every inch of ye, down to the third rib!” It is a favorite moment for book readers, so it was critical Dresbach got this right.

We did not get to see Claire’s third rib or navel but what we got was nothing short of amazing. The late 1940’s fashion inspired Dresbach creation of the red dress. Claire is wearing fifteen yards of gorgeous Duchesse Satin that shined in the sunlight. No frilly lace, embroidery or flowers to over complicate the beautiful dress. Claire’s porcelain skin glows against the red satin material. If the pleats in the skirt are familiar, it is because the last time we saw them on Claire was in her wedding dress to Jamie. If Claire’s intention was to draw attention to herself with the red dress, she certainly accomplished her mission.
